Types of Dentures

Complete (Full) Dentures

Complete dentures replace all teeth in the upper or lower jaw (or both). They consist of a gum-colored acrylic base that sits over your gums, with natural-looking artificial teeth attached.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures replace one or several missing teeth while your remaining natural teeth stay in place. They consist of replacement teeth attached to a gum-colored base, connected by a metal framework or flexible resin that holds the denture in place.

Implant-Supported Dentures

For enhanced stability, dentures can be supported by dental implants. This option provides:

The Denture Fitting Process

1. Initial Consultation

We'll examine your mouth, discuss your needs and expectations, and recommend the best denture solution for you. X-rays may be taken if needed.

2. Impressions and Measurements

We take precise impressions of your mouth and jaw, and measurements of how your jaws relate to each other and the space between them.

3. Models and Wax Forms

Based on the impressions, models and wax forms are created to test the fit, shape, and color of your dentures. You'll try these on multiple times, and adjustments are made until we achieve the perfect fit and appearance.

4. Final Denture

Once the wax form is perfected, your final denture is cast in the chosen material and carefully finished.

5. Fitting and Adjustments

We fit your new dentures and make any necessary adjustments. Some minor soreness or increased saliva flow is normal initially, but these effects subside as you adjust to your new dentures.

Denture FAQs

Will dentures look natural?

Yes! Modern dentures are designed to look very natural. We match the color, size, and shape of the teeth to complement your facial features and remaining natural teeth (for partial dentures). The gum-colored base is also made to closely match your natural gum tissue. Most people won't be able to tell you're wearing dentures.

How long does it take to get used to new dentures?

Most people adjust to new dentures within 4-8 weeks. Initially, dentures may feel loose, uncomfortable, or bulky, and you may experience increased saliva flow. These sensations decrease as your mouth adjusts. Eating and speaking may feel awkward at first but will improve with practice.

Can I eat normally with dentures?

Yes, but it takes practice. Start with soft foods cut into small pieces, and chew slowly using both sides of your mouth to keep dentures stable. As you become more comfortable, you can gradually add other foods back into your diet. Avoid very sticky or hard foods that might dislodge or damage dentures.

How long do dentures last?

With proper care, dentures typically last 5-8 years. However, they may need to be relined, remade, or rebased due to normal wear or changes in your mouth structure. Regular dental visits help ensure your dentures continue to fit properly.

Do I need to remove my dentures at night?

Most dentists recommend removing dentures for at least 4-6 hours each day, typically overnight. This gives your gum tissues a chance to rest and helps maintain good oral health. However, immediate dentures may need to be worn continuously for the first several days, including overnight.

Will dentures affect my speech?

You may have difficulty pronouncing certain words initially, but this improves with practice. Reading aloud and practicing difficult words helps speed up adjustment. If dentures "click" while talking, speak more slowly. If problems persist, schedule an adjustment appointment.

Can dentures be repaired if they break?

Yes, in most cases dentures can be repaired. However, attempting DIY repairs with household glue can damage dentures beyond repair and may harm your mouth. Always consult your dentist for proper repairs. We can usually repair or adjust dentures within a day.

How much do dentures cost?

The cost varies depending on the type of dentures (complete vs. partial), materials used, and complexity of your case. Partial dentures are generally less expensive than complete dentures, and implant-supported dentures cost more than traditional dentures. Most health insurance plans provide some coverage for dentures. We'll provide a detailed cost estimate during your consultation and can process insurance claims through HICAPS.
